"Supreme Court Ruling on Medical Marijuana Does Not Affect State Laws Protecting Patients"
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled 8-0 in favor of
the federal government in U.S. v. Oakland Cannabis Buyers' Cooperative
(No. 00-151) -- a case addressing whether or not medical marijuana
distributors may offer a "medical necessity" defense in federal court.
The Court's ruling DOES NOT OVERTURN STATE LAWS allowing seriously ill
people to possess and grow their own medical marijuana.

Shasta County Medical Marijuana Inter-Agency Protocol

Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that it would issue a ruling
on whether federal law permits the medical use of marijuana. This is
the first time in U.S. history that the Supreme Court will issue a
ruling on medical marijuana. The court will hear arguments in early
2001 and should render a decision by June 2001.

Maine's Medical Marijuana Task Force has approved a proposal to authorize the distribution of marijuana that is based on recommendations made by MPP's Director of State Policies Richard Schmitz, who testified before the task force on July 12. In addition to embracing MPP's call for state-authorized distribution, a plurality of task force members supported MPP's request that a research bill not be biased in favor of studies that feature non-smoked methods of administering marijuana.
